Coach or Mentor? Which Do You Need?
Role and Approach
- Coach: A coach typically focuses on specific skills and tasks, providing structured guidance and training to improve performance. They may employ techniques like goal setting, feedback, and accountability to help the travel agent develop their skills and achieve their objectives.
- Mentor: A mentor, on the other hand, takes a broader approach, offering wisdom, advice, and support based on their own experiences and insights. They provide guidance on navigating the industry, making strategic decisions, and developing professionally.
Scope of Relationship
- Coach: The relationship is usually more formal and goal-oriented, with specific objectives set for skill development and performance improvement. It may be a short-term engagement focused on achieving specific outcomes.
- Mentor: The relationship with a mentor tends to be more informal and long-term. It involves ongoing support and guidance as you navigate your career and face various challenges and opportunities in the industry.
Expertise and Experience
- Coach: Coaches typically have expertise in coaching methodologies and techniques, as well as knowledge of the specific industry or skill area they are coaching in. They may not necessarily have direct experience working in your specific industry.
- Mentor: Mentors, on the other hand, are usually seasoned professionals who have extensive experience and success in your industry. They offer valuable insights and advice based on their own career journey and lessons learned along the way.
Focus of Guidance
- Coach: Coaches focus on improving specific skills and behaviors , like sales techniques, customer service, marketing, or time management.
- Mentor: Mentors provide guidance on broader aspects of career development and business growth, such as networking, building client relationships, industry trends, and professional development opportunities.
The Bottom Line
Both coaches and mentors offer guidance and support but they differ in their approach, scope, expertise, and focus of guidance. A coach provides structured, goal-oriented support to improve specific skills, while a mentor offers broader, long-term advice based on their own experiences and expertise in the industry.
Why should you trust me?
Because this business is HARD, and you need to trust someone.
However you came into it, it’s not what you thought it was going to be, or you wouldn’t be reading this.
You’d be lounging in a hammock in your free beachfront VIP suite while all your friends and family politely emailed you their credit card numbers to book fabulous vacations. What? That hasn’t happened yet?
Yeah, me either. Friends and family can be the worst prospects (and I don’t say “clients”, because clients hire you; F&F rarely do), and you’ve got to make $ before you can use all those agent rates you heard so much about.
Why should you trust me? Well, because I’ve seen just about everything this industry has to offer. I’ve been selling travel for 25 years, and most of that time was also spent training and mentoring new agents. I've been an employee, and IC, a franchise owner, and I've changed hosts and my entire business structure more than once. I also suffered a hellacious case of burn out and had to take a break for a couple of years. I want to help you avoid that.
The big takeaway? There are as many ways to run a travel business as there are agents who start them. Hell, we can’t even agree on a consistent name to call ourselves or if we get paid like professionals or work on commission like used car salesmen. But I digress.
My point is, to be profitable, happy, and not burned out by the end of your first year, you need a plan. You need resources. And you need someone to meet you where you are and help you figure out what comes next.

Think of me as therapy for your business. Our relationship may be short. It may last for several months. It shouldn’t last longer than a year, or we both need to look for other careers.
In 25 years, I’ve been through A LOT of trainings. I’ve written a lot of courses, I’ve designed a lot of curriculum, & I’ve trained and mentored a lot of agents. I KNOW what’s out there, and I also know what’s missing...so I created it.
You need a clearing house, a road map on where YOU should start, and a co-pilot to give you direction along the way. Preferably one that teaches the way you learn and is in expert on what you need you to know. Relax. We’ve got this.
